4X-EKB (29958 / 249) El Al Boeing 737-800 in-flight. Air to air photo taken 2 Apr 2017 over Greece. El Al have operated the 737 since 1981 with a fleet of 6 737-200s and now have 17 737-800s and -900s. This particular aircraft is 18 years old and has been with El Al for all that time. The extra antenna underneath the fuselage behind the main wheel well is C-MUSIC (Multi Spectral Infrared Counter) manufactured by Israel-based, Elbit Systems. El Al began fitting the system to all of its fleet in 2013. D-MUSIC replaces IAI Flight Guard which was fitted to El Al 767s in 2004 and fired flares as decoys for heat seaking missiles. C-MUSIC™ is a pod-mounted direct infrared countermeasure (DIRCM) system specifically designed to protect large jet aircraft from infrared missile threats. The pod integrates advanced fiber laser and thermal imaging technologies to deflect shoulder-fired IR missiles (MANPADS) from their intended target. |
