The CFM56-7 & LEAP-1B engines on the NG and MAX have a small, round, grille on the outboard thrust reverser sleeve. If you look closely, you can see that there are two other similar round access doors (but without grilles) above and below this grille of the same diameter. All 3 of these are access panels for the thrust reverser hydraulic actuator's aft attach point. The center access panel has a dual purpose as it is also a vent. The translating sleeve has a seal all around the front of its inside wall. When the thrust reverser is in the stow position a bullnose fairing pushes against this seal. This compresses the seal preventing fan air exhaust airflow escaping into the inner part of the translating sleeve. The center access panel has a grille to give an exit for any air that gets past the bullnose seal. This prevents damage to the sleeve components if the seal fails. There is no such vent on the CFM56-3 for the Classics. |
