On 20 Nov 2023, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon, 169561 (66094/8026), delivered 2020; overran the far end of Runway 22 at 13:59L (23:59z), while landing at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay (PHNG) on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The aircraft came to rest in shallow water 50m offshore.

All 9 crew evacuated the aircraft with no reported injuries.

Runway 22 is 7771ft x 200ft or 2368m x 61m metric.

The METAR suggests that the aircraft may have landed with a tailwind.

A statement from the US Navy’s Third Fleet said the P-8, based in Whidbey Island, Washington, with “Skinny Dragons” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 4, was "on a detachment in support of maritime homeland defense."

This is the first accident to any P-8 since its first flight in 2009.

Update 3 Dec 2023, the Navy has removed the fuel and will attempt to use inflatable cylinders to lift and roll the aircraft off the reef and back onto land. Rear Adm. Kevin Lenox, the commander of Carrier Strike Group 3 who is leading the salvage effort said said that "The jet is in good condition and the Navy hopes to get it flying again"
